Electronic Cigarettes: Are they Stop Smoking Aids
Is it me or are there electronic cigarette ads all over the internet. Type “stop smoking” into Google, and you’ll come across articles upon articles detailing information about electronic cigarettes. Who is writing all these articles? Well first of all, contrary to what the authors say, the majority of electronic cigarette (e-cig) articles are not written by people who have actually quit smoking after using e-cigs for 6 months. Okay, now that the cat is out of the bag, what’s next?
The manufacturers of these e-cigs expressly say on their websites that their products are substitutes for the real McCoy. No where do you find the words, “stop smoking aid” listed as a use for the e-cig. There is a reason for that. The FDA has to test, research and approve all products that claim the stop smoking aid label. So any product that sells itself as a stop smoking aid, will fall under the scrutiny and regulation of the FDA. As you can imagine, these companies do not want this kind of detailed oversight. So they stick to their guns and claim the e-cig as, what it is, a substitute for real smoking.
This leaves the door open for affiliates who sell their products, much like Amazon does. They sign up people who place the products on their own proprietary websites. This keeps the manufacturers off the hook for any false advertising claims. Who is going to go after all the affiliates located on the world wide web? As an additional funny bit of information about the legitimacy of this cottage industry, the affiliates are notorious for spinning articles written by competent people who are trying to provide accurate information. These spun articles are actually pretty funny to read. They’ll take something like, “Bob quit smoking using the anti-depressant, Zyban, which is also known as Buproprion.” and spin it to say, “Bob ceased the smoking depression after e-cigs, known by Zyban and boiling.”
Unfortunately, the consumer is the one that pays. They think they are getting a safe alternative to smoking. They think this will help them stop smoking. Generally speaking, what they get is poor product quality control, continued addiction and only the feeling they have done something of note.
I’ll give the idea of an e-cig its due. With the right production, research and marketing, I can see where it might be a useful tool in the battle against smoking. But it has to change and make itself available to research rather than hiding behind it’s affiliate core. To show an example of this, I read an actual article on a print news website where the author was touting the e-cig as “a new healthy cigarette which would help people stop smoking”. With inaccurate news being reported like this, it’s easy to see why so many people are falling for the hype.
