Like Narayana said, burning fossil fuels causes pollution. Burning oil releases carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming; the change in temperature caused by global warming can cause changes in local weather cycles, and interrupt photosynthesis in plants as it ocurrs naturally; it also displaces species that cannot adapt to their new conditions. Burning coal releases pollutants like sulfur dioxide and mercury. From coal-burning power plants, mercury can enter the atmosphere and get into rain, and then get into the ocean and enter the bodies of the animals living there; that's how mercury gets into tuna. Natural gas, made mostly of methane, is toxic to living beings in general. Extracting non-renewable fossil fuels can be damaging; coal is the most damaging, since it's often extracted using mountain-top removal, which completely removes the tops of mountains so that they can be mined, causing habitat destruction; oil extraction isn't as damaging in comparison, since it's just drilling into the ground, but the roads that are built to provide access to the drilling site can cause damage; in parts of Alaska where oil is drilled, this can be a problem because caribou won't cross the access roads. |
